2012-2013 Calendar Approved
Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Becky Gallagher reported to the Board that a survey for staff was conducted prior to the calendar committee meeting. Questions regarding the calendar were also included in the Parent Survey, which is conducted at the end of first quarter each year. The main purpose of the surveys is to get feedback from the staff and parents regarding suggestions brought forward by committee members while working on last year’s calendar. It was an opportunity for stakeholders to provide input prior to the calendar committee process. This proactive process of gathering data from staff and parents prior to the time when the committee met was again beneficial in developing the calendar and led to discussion in the committee meeting. It allowed the committee to make decisions based on the opinions of the majority of staff members and parents. The results from the staff survey, as well as results from the annual parent survey, were used in the formulation of the 2012-2013 calendar. The calendar contains the required 174 student days, teacher workdays, and contracted holidays. Dismissals for inclement weather will be made up at the end, as follows May 16, May 17, May 20, May 21, May 22 and May 23. (see attachment)

The training covered such areas as disaster preparedness, medical operations, fire safety including training on how to properly put out a fire with a fire extinguisher, search and rescue, and terrorism. Representatives from the Pleasant Hill Fire Department were on hand to help with the training.

Annual Performance Report (APR)
For the seventh consecutive year, the Pleasant Hill R-III School District will receive a Distinction in Performance award as a result of our score on the Annual Performance Report (APR) released from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This annual report is based on MAP scores, ACT scores, percentages of students enrolled in advanced and vocational courses, graduation rates and attendance. Overall, these results provide evidence that the District is consistently providing students the best learning opportunities in their continuous effort to increase student achievement. Pleasant Hill R-III School District received MET in 13 of 14 areas assessed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as part of the District’s Annual Performance Report. The District also MET on two bonus categories as a result of growth on state testing. The bonus categories were: Voluntary Science/Social Studies Assessment Achievement and Grades 3—8 Math / Communication Arts growth. As a result of the District meeting the two bonus categories our score is 14 on APR. Districts earning a MET in at least 13 of 14 areas including all MAP students, receive the designation ‘Distinction in Performance’. Despite possible misconceptions, it is not an easy feat for a District to earn 14 points on the APR, as we did this school year. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Becky Gallagher stated “ The way to improved student achievement is through a planned, systemic, and concerted effort on the part of stakeholders. Our entire staff has worked extremely hard to ensure students are provided all necessary ingredients to be successful both during their school experience and upon graduation.” The State APR assesses fourteen separate standards as opposed to the Federal government’s Adequate-Yearly-Progress (AYP) which only assesses student progress in Math and Communication Arts.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES: Monday & Tuesday, October 17 & 18 from 4:00-8:00pm

Our middle school format, referred to as “student-led conferences”, allows students to play an important role in acknowledging their educational responsibilities under the guidance of their advisory teachers. Each student has a portfolio which he/she is responsible for filling with the following required elements: pieces of choice work from each class, teacher behavior information sheets, grade card and student prepared plan of progress.

Eighth graders and parents will meet in the gym while seventh graders and their parents will meet in the cafeteria. Individual tables will be set up in each location. Students will present their portfolios to their parents and a teacher will be at the table to answer specific questions and help guide the student through this process. Each conference will take approximately 10 minutes.

There is no need to make an appointment, just follow the schedule below: (unless you have a special concern that requires meeting individually with a specific teacher without your student present)

Community, Booster Club and School Come Together To Give Face Lift To Sports Facilities
In these trying financial times, it is difficult for school districts across the country to provide for all of the needs that arise. Things are no different in this sense for the Pleasant Hill School District. What is different in Pleasant Hill is that the School District and its patrons work together to get things accomplished. Thanks to this cooperative atmosphere, two of the community’s sports facilities have recently received upgrades.
The first facility is Skyline Field, home of the Pleasant Hill Chicks High School Softball team and where city youth games are played throughout the summer. The cooperation of the softball team, Booster Club and school district made it possible to put new roofs on the dugouts at Skyline Field. The softball team made a financial contribution toward the project which was matched by the Booster Club. The two contributions together made the project possible as the School District was then able to match the contributions of the Booster Club and softball team. In addition, a fresh coat of paint for the backstop has reversed the hands of time on the facility giving it a fresh new look.
The second facility receiving a face lift is Eklund Field, home of the Pleasant Hill Roosters’ football teams. Many pieces had to come together to make this project a success. Coach Kyle Roach organized a fund raiser for his football team around the start of the season. The football players went to the community to sell cards that provide discounts at many local businesses. Through the hard work of the football players, the support of local businesses, and the financial support of patrons, the football team was able to raise funds to meet their objectives.
After the goals of the fundraiser were paid, there was a small balance left for a possible future need. Coach Roach is always looking for ways to upgrade the facility. The entrance to Eklund Field had become rusted including the gates; therefore, Coach Roach looked into purchasing new gates for the entrance on Eklund. Roy Brinkoetter, 1987 graduate of Pleasant Hill High School and owner of Brinkoetter Ironworks was contacted about manufacturing the gates. Through some discussion, the larger long-term plan of redoing the front entrance was revealed. When Mr. Brinkoetter was told that there was only enough money for the gates and the rest of the project would have to wait for a future day, he decided to donate the labor and materials to do the rest of the project. Brinkoetter Ironworks shop foreman Jim Westbrook and 2004 Pleasant Hill graduate Jarrod Summers assisted Mr. Brinkoetter in the project.
Thanks to the efforts of the football players, the local businesses that supported the fundraiser, patrons who purchased the cards, and the extreme generosity of Mr. Brinkoetter, the entrance at Eklund Field is once again something of which the players and the community can be proud. Local and area businesses supporting the fundraiser were: Casey’s General Store, Sonic, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Home Plate, Roosters, Pizza Shoppe, Kailonies Salon and Spa, The Daily Shake, Totally U, Jumpin Catfish, Planet Sub, Champs, Eastbay, Enterprise, Footaction, FTD, Godfather’s, Omaha Steaks, AMF. The Pleasant Hill School District would like to thank everyone who contributed to making these projects a success.

Annual Performance Report (APR) released
The preliminary Annual Performance Report (APR) was released last Friday.  Congratulations to the entire staff are in order because our district, for the sixth consecutive year, met 100% of Missouri’s performance standards.  The administration and Board greatly appreciate your effort and focus on improved instruction during the past years.

There are 14 performance standards which include MAP/EOC testing for Math and Communications Arts in grades 3 - 11, ACT, advanced courses, career education courses, college placement, career education placement, graduation rate, attendance, and AYP (federal) subgroup achievement.  The Pleasant Hill R-III School District met 14 of 14 standards.  These standards measure most areas of the educational process and meeting all 14 confirms the commitment and dedication of our teachers, support staff, administrators, and students year after year.  We are extremely proud of everyone involved.

Our challenge, as always, is to continue moving forward.  Principals will continue working with staff to review and revise Building Improvement Plans that directly address student achievement.  Using the most recent assessment data, continuous planning will include revisions in curriculum, professional development, instructional strategies, etc.  I encourage everyone to work with your principals and be active participants in this improvement process.

Important Notice Regarding Immunization Clinics sponsored by the Cass County Health Department (CCHD)
Effective 1 April 2010 , immunization clinics will no longer be provided on a walk-in basis by the CCHD. Instead, they will be by appointment only. We deeply regret the inconvenience that this will likely cause but significant personnel cuts have forced the health department to make these changes. If you have private medical insurance that covers the cost of vaccines, you will be expected to receive them from your provider. If your child is participating in Mo HealthNet (formerly MC+) and you see a private provider for the vaccines, please continue to do so if possible. The clinic appointments will be targeted at those who are uninsured, those on Mo HealthNet without a private provider and those with insurance that does not cover the cost of the vaccines. For this last group, there will be a $5.00 per child charge for vaccines. Payment should be made by check or exact change. Vaccinations for those 19 years or older will continue to incur a charge based on the particular vaccine that is given. Appointments can be made by calling 816-380-8431/8432. Thank you for your cooperation.

District Prepares for Inclement Weather
Pleasant Hill R-III School District encompasses approximately 75 square miles. During inclement weather, road conditions usually vary widely from one area to another. This sometimes makes for a difficult decision on whether to close or delay school. Last year the District developed snow routes for use when necessary.
A snow route is a modified bus route that generally runs on main roads rather than side streets or through neighborhoods where driving a school bus may not be possible during severe weather. Snow routes will be used when main roads are clear enough for safe travel but side roads are not as clear. If snow routes are in effect, some students will have to catch their bus at alternate stops. On snow route days, to avoid confusion, students will be returned after school to their snow route stops regardless of changes in the weather. Although snow routes were never utilized last year we intend to have them available for use in certain situations.
The decision to use snow routes, cancel, or delay school is made by 5:30 am. The district will then contact the emergency notification center who contacts TV broadcast stations. R-III families and staff members will also be notified by ADT, the recorded phone service. Parents are urged to provide schools with updated information for any phone numbers that change throughout the year. Please note that school closing information will not appear on the district website.
Attendance must still be taken on these days but we encourage parents to use their best judgment in deciding if they should bring their children to a bus stop or school. We also encourage inexperienced school age drivers to ride with adults or on the bus during this time. These situations disrupt family schedules and we appreciate your patience during severe weather conditions. We recognize the importance of having children in school on a regular schedule with quality learning time, but be assured our top concern is always the safety of students and staff.
Dismissals for unexpected circumstances will be made up in the following order: May 21, Jan. 18, Feb. 15, Mar. 31, Apr. 1 and May 24. Days cancelled in excess of six will be added to the end.

R-III School District to use ‘snow routes

Pleasant Hill R-III School District encompasses approximately 75 square miles. During inclement weather, road conditions usually vary widely from one area to another. This sometimes makes for a difficult decision on whether to close or delay school. Beginning this year, on a trial basis, the District will utilize snow routes when appropriate.

Depending on where you live, a snow route may or may not be necessary.

The decision to use snow routes, cancel, or delay school is made by 5:30 am. The district will then contact the emergency notification center who contacts TV broadcast stations.  Parents/guardians will also be notified by a recorded phone service. Parents are urged to provide schools with updated information for any phone numbers that change throughout the year.

Children’s Vision Law
According to Senate Bill 16, enacted in 2007 every child enrolling in a public school kindergarten and new enrollees in first grade must receive a comprehensive eye examination from a state-licensed optometrist or physician. The cost of the exam is the responsibility of the parents. By January 1, 2009 parents and guardians shall provide to the school district proof of the required vision exam or a statement that they are opting out of the exam. The form to be used for completing this vision exam is available on the district website at www.pleasant hillschools.com. For more information, please visit the Missouri Optometric Association’s website www.moeye care.org.
